Year in College: Junior Major: Latin American and Latino/a Studies Minor: Minor in Art and Minor in Human Rights Career Goal: Social Work Hobbies: Soccer, Volleyball, Swimming, Bowling, Painting, Planting, and Do it Yourself projects (DIY’S) ¿Why I joined La Voz and what about it do I like the most? I joined La Voz because I feel connected with the club. As a LLS Major I like to represent Latinos in my community and I am determined to share the struggles face here in the United States but also in Latin American and other counties. What I like about La Voz is that we support all of our brothers and sisters and anyone who wishes to join. ¿Something that I wish I knew when I was a freshman? Something I wish I knew when I was a freshman is connecting with people and professors. Finishing my freshman year I was determined to make new friends and connect with professors in my major and other departments. If anyone has any personal or academic question they can email me and I will gladly help them out. |

Year in College: Freshman Major: political Science Minor: Latin American And Latino/a studies Career goals: Lawyer, Human rights advocate Hobbies: Soccer, Gym, Reading, and spending time with my family ¿Why I joined La Voz and what about it do I like the most? I joined La Voz because I enjoy being close to my Latinos while working together and supporting each other to reach our objectives that will improve our community. The transparency of our members and their honesty is what I like the most about La Voz. In other words we do what we say! And say what we do! ¿Something that I wish I knew when I was a freshman? I am a freshman but something that I wish I knew before coming to John Jay College of Criminal Justice would have been the subway system. My first week in college was not so fun because I will take the uptown train by mistake when in reality my goal was to arrive at Penn Station. |

Year in College: Junior Majors: Latin American and Latinos Studies B.A. & Anthropology B.A. Career Goals: One of my goals is to travel and conduct research on Indigenous communities in Latin American countries ¿Why Did I Join La Voz? I joined because my older sister however, after joining I realized La Voz helped me learn more about issues pertaining Latin America as well as helped me connect more to the Latino Community. It has also helped provide support from not only the students but also the faculty in the LLS Department. The close relationship and the collaborations with the LLS faculty is one of the things that I love about La Voz. ¿Something I knew when I was a freshman? One thing that I wished I knew when I was a Freshman was the scholarships and the fellowships that John Jay offers to their students for study abroad. |

Lissette Caravantes, former president of La Voz! Currently in her senior year, Lissette is double majoring in Political Science and Latin American and Latina/o Studies. She envisions herself as an internationalist advocating for self determination and also becoming a lawyer advocating for labor rights. "I joined La Voz because it was one of the first clubs whose members were very welcoming and supportive. The connection the club has with the LLS department has helped me grow as a person tremendously." "If I could be a freshman again, I would tell myself not to be so shy.
